Dice the apples and toss them with lemon juice in a large bowl. Add maple syrup, apple juice, and seasonings.
In another bowl, combine the topping ingredients until the oats are coated well and the ingredients are combined. Be sure to use cold butter.
Add the apple mixture to the baking dish in an even layer and spread the topping over top.
Bake for 30 minutes, then cover with aluminum foil and bake until the apple crisp is bubbling. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes.
Hint: Covering the crisp halfway through allows it to get the perfect golden brown crisp topping while not getting too burnt.
🥄 Variations
- For a vegan option, replace the butter with a vegan alternative.
- You can take out the almonds and make this more of an apple crumble. The almond flour still helps to make the perfect crumble topping.
- If you need a substitute for the almonds, you can use walnuts or pecans.
- For a more decadent version, add a drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce before serving.
- If you prefer to not use sugar-free maple, you can use real maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, white sugar, or brown sugar. I have even seen this made with coconut sugar. However, all of these sugars will add extra points.
🍽️ What to Serve With
- I love this apple crisp with ice cream but I don't want to add a lot of points so I use my favorite homemade WW vanilla Ice cream or WW apple pie ice cream. You can also make homemade sugar free whipped cream.

💭Top Tips
- Use a combination of sweet and tart apples. It provides the best flavor.
- Adding a sprinkle of cinnamon on top before baking will give it an extra flavor punch.
- Use only a bit of butter – it adds to the flavor without adding too much fat.
- Make sure to cut the apples into thin slices. Too thick and they won’t soften, but too thin and they will turn mushy.
❔FAQs
You need to use large firm baking apples. These are apples that bake well; they won't get mushy and they won't stay hard. You can use any type of sweet-tart apple such as Granny Smith apples, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, or Gala apples.
Yes, absolutely you can make something other than an oat topping! Instead of covering your apple crisp with oat mixture, you can use other combinations of ingredients such as crumbled graham crackers, crushed hazelnuts, or even a combination of different nuts and seeds. This will provide a crunchy texture that complements the baked apples.
Yes, you can certainly make this recipe with other fruits. Apples are traditional but other fruits like making a peach crisp, or try pears, plums, and berries also work great in this recipe. You may need to adjust the baking time depending on the type of fruit you use.
